Mobile phones, GPS systems, even online translators can all be traced to his iconic concept of an utopian technological future. Star Trek is perhaps the most influential science fiction TV series in history, but its cultural influence goes far beyond - phrases like "Beam me up, Scotty" and "Resistance is futile" are commonly used and words from the show (such as "Klingon") have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Many scientists and engineers acknowledge that their professional and life choices were influenced by Star Trek (Martin Cooper, the inventor of the first non-vehicular cell phone was motivated to develop it from watching use of a communicator on Star Trek) and our Software R&D team is no different! When we try to extract information from a stack of data, we need tools to help us find what's relevant and what's important and to explore different scenarios. A report, whether printed on paper or viewed on-screen, is at best a two-dimensional representation of data, a table using columns and rows. That's sufficient when we have only two factors to consider, but in the real world we need more powerful tools. Data cubes are multidimensional extensions of 2-D tables, just as in geometry a cube is a three-dimensional extension of a square. The word cube brings to mind a 3-D object, and we can think of a 3-D data cube as being a set of similarly structured 2-D tables stacked on top of one another. In actual fact, “Conn,” is a naval term meaning the power to metaphorically steer the course of an endeavor or enterprise. When “conn” (in the form “cun”) first appeared in English in the 17th century as a verb, it meant “to direct the steering or course of a ship,” usually from the bridge of the ship or its equivalent. Early battleships actually had elevated “conning towers,” armored to protect the captain, but today the same functions are usually carried out from a “conning station” on the ship’s bridge. In today's Navy, the Officer of the Deck (OOD) is the Captain’s representative on watch. The OOD can, and often does, have the conn as well: he will announce it to the control room: e.g. “This is Lt. Sulu, I have the Deck and the Conn.” The conn can be delegated to a junior officer for convenience or training: e.g. “This is Lt. Sulu, and I have the Deck; Ensign Crusher has the Conn.” (and yes, we know Sulu is from the Original series while Wesley Crusher is from Star Trek:The Next Generation!)
